BORDE HILL EQUESTRIAN

Feeding the Grassroots and Grooming the Stars of the Future

Following the first succesful event in 2005, Area 11 Pony Club Eventing was back on Thursday August 10th 2006 at Borde Hill.

In the aftermath of the successful London 2012 Olympic Bid, the Lawnflite Pony Club Area 11 Eventing Qualifier on August 10th was the perfect chance for some of the young stars of the future to show their talent by earning a place at the Pony Club National Championships.

The event made full use of the 1.10m, 1m and 90cm cross-country courses built for the B.E. Horse Trials, making the most of the natural splendour of the venue, its undulating terrain and glistening lakes.

Branches with members competing came from Kent, East Sussex and the western side of Surrey and West Sussex. Many of Great Britain's top eventers have come from this area including two of the GB Olympic Silver medal Team in Athens, Pippa Funnell (Eridge PC) and William Fox-Pitt (West Street South).

Report on Brockham Harness Club
Two-Day Carriage Driving Trials

at Borde Hill Country Fair

August 19th-20th 2006

Once again the Brockham team produced a first class Two Day Event at Borde Hill with record entries contesting the weekend of competition on August 19-20. Running alongside the Borde Hill Country Fair crowds of spectators were able to see some top national and talented grassroots drivers in action with the weather favouring us despite moments when rain threatened.

After arriving at Borde Hill on the Friday the 80 competitors opened their challenge with dressage and cones on Saturday with the famous Brockham Barbecue as the evening’s essential entertainment.  In the midst of all the party hi-jinks one brave person was having his head shaved into a dramatic Mohican – David Taylor over-generously volunteered to raise money for the GB team for the Para-Equestrian Games on 6th-10th September at Helendoorne in Holland. You can still support his gallant effort via the club.

Sunday’s marathon produced some exhilarating action and there was plenty of skill on display through Andrew Simmons’ obstacles. He had made some changes from previous years to test drivers’ abilities, including new gates in the ‘B’ and the Pines and the addition of the new Creaseys Conundrum near the stable field.

The eventual overall winners were: Ben Edmed (Novice Pony Qualifier), Julia Crockford, (Novice Horse Qualifier), Colin Wheeler (Club Novice Pony), Michelle Kenny (Club Novice Horse), Anna Grayston (Open Pony), David Matthews (Open Horse), Susan Skeggs (Pony Pairs), John Pickford (Horse Pairs), Sarah-Jane Cook (Teams/Tandems) and Sadie Butcher (Short Marathon). Philippa Howe, who was 3rd in the Open Pony, won the trophy for the best Brockham member, and also led the Bradbourne drivers to victory in the Team competition while her backstep won the Colbourne Cup which recognises the guiding force in the sport!!! Our grateful thanks to all our generous sponsors including UBM Hire, Creaseys Chartered Accountants and Jack in a Box Saddlery without whom it would be extremely difficult to put on such a quality event. Also essential to the success of the weekend is all the time put in by all the helpers from the ‘A Team’ who got the courses ready to the officials who worked long hours at the event manning their all crucial posts.
